A CHILDREN'S author who lived in Dorking before finding success in America has written a new book inspired by her memories of the town.
Caroline Ludovici grew up in London and moved to Dorking with her husband and two young children in the late 1980s, living in Harrow Close for about seven years.
Caroline Ludovici's new book is set in DorkingMrs Ludovici's first book, The Obsidian Mask, was published earlier this year, and her new short story, The Clearing, is set in Dorking.
She said: "We loved living in Dorking, we made some great friends. My children played on the Nower, which is a fantastic area that is wild and safe at the same time for children to play.
"It was just down the road from us, and I wrote the story so they wouldn't forget their happy times in Dorking."
The Clearing, which was inspired by a painting done by a friend of Mrs Lucovici, is about a boy who is handed an old box containing a set of keys, a lump of rock and a letter addressed to him from an old man.
Mrs Ludovici, who lives in Philadelphia, said: "The gentleman explains what happened to him one day while walking his dog many years ago on the Nower in Dorking.
"After following his dog, who had trotted off the path and into the rhododendron bushes at the far end of the park, he saw something so extraordinary and so unbelievable in a clearing that he didn't even know existed.
"Because of what he saw, he then had to take on the secret that he was sworn to keep for the rest of his life, as the knowledge that was given to him, if in the wrong hands, would have consequences for the whole world."
The Clearing is only available by contacting the author – e-mail info@carolineludovici.com – and she has promised to sign every copy she sells.
"The running theme of my work is really telling great, exciting, down-to-earth stories with a backdrop of history and archaeology," she said.
"Nothing gives me greater pleasure than reading feedback from children who have written to me saying how they never really thought of people living in ancient times and now they do."
