We interview local author, Caroline Ludovici, who recently published the new adventure story for young teens, The Obsidian Mask, which is on sale at Nestology.
Nestology- The title is interesting, what is your book about?
Caroline- The Obsidian Mask is the first adventure involving four teens who are visiting their archaeologist parents at their desert excavation. Natasha and Alex have flown from London to see their mother and Lorenzo and Gabriella from Milan to visit their father. The mask is one of the ancient artifacts that has been excavated from a legendary Mesopotamian warrior queen’s tomb. The teens are kidnapped for the mask by criminals. As well as being an exciting story, the reader actually learns a little with the children in the book, like why a city disappears beneath the sands and is completely forgotten. They also learn a little with the children in the book about the workings of a dig..
Nestology- Why did you write about this region of the world?
Caroline- I’ve always loved learning about the Middle East, even as a child. I've traveled there a lot, too. Ancient Mesopotamia is the region between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in Iraq. It is what is known as the ‘Cradle of Civilization,’where the written word first developed and spread, and where man first started farming and cultivating the land. The first settlements sprang up there, and they became very civilized while we in the west were not! It’s fascinating and I wanted young readers to appreciate this.
Nestology- What age-group of readership are you aiming at?
Caroline- From about 10-11 years up. I’m getting great feedback from tweens to sixteen year olds. Even their parents are enjoying it, which is great! Anyone who’s interested could read it, really, young or old! It is exciting and heartwarming. The characters are strong and really grow on you. It's a meaty book!
Nestology- Is there any romance in the book?
Caroline- There is a little... There is an underlying sub-story that continues throughout the books, between Natasha and Alex’s mother, Julia, a divorcee, and the two Italian children’s father, Marcello, the director of the dig, a widower. This causes resentment and jealousy to say the least, from Natasha who was really hoping her parents would get back together. But her negative attitude towards her mother when she arrives is noticed by a handsome Polish volunteer at the dig, which causes her to mellow out on her mom when he takes her under his wing and shows her around the site and what he is working on. But this leads her to have her first crush.
Nestology- So there's more to the story than the ancient Queen's excavation?
Caroline- Yes, that’s the backdrop, as interesting as the history and archaeology are, the story is the dangerous adventure the children get themselves into while they are visiting the amazing dig, and the relationship between them that develops.
Nestology- Sounds intriguing. When is the sequel available?
Caroline- Next year. It is all done and ready to go! It is called 'Secrets of The River'. I am itching to get it out! It’s based around a fascinating excavation in Italy. Hannibal, who crossed the Alps with his army and elephants into Italy has something to do with the story, plus stolen art hidden by the Nazi’s after WW11, all while Marcello and his team excavate ancient sunken ships in Pisa. You’ll have to wait until next year! We learn more about the Italian teens, Lorenzo and Gabriella ...
Nestology- Thank you for letting us have The Obsidian Mask at Nestology. It is a
